For the rest of us

We celebrated Summerfest this weekend.  Not sure exactly what Summerfest is.  Basically a community festival complete with carnival, parade and fireworks held the weekend after July 4th.

After growing up in the 'Dale where July 4th is the holiest of all community festivals, Summerfest kind of seems like an after thought at times.  The Fourth of July around here is completely silent.  No parade, no fireworks, nothing.

So to make up for a non-existant Fourth of July Ankeny does things right for Summerfest.

We did the parade this morning with good friends.  And increased our candy stash by threefold.

Tonight we stayed out way past our bedtimes to go to Soak up the Son.  {We didn't get home until 9:00!! We are living on the edge, people.}  Live music.  Outdoor concert.  Friends to chat with.  Little girls being mini-groupies in the front row.  Super sweet.  We had fun.

Tomorrow night we'll enjoy fireworks that we can see from our driveway.  Incredibly convenient when we want to put Audrey to bed, but let Madeline stay up to see them.

To close I leave you with an assortment of Summerfest Madeline-isms.

It's way past my bedtime...

At the carnival, seeing some teenagers with brightly colored hair.
Madeline: Why is their hair colored? (In her world, "colored" as in it-looks-like-they-colored-their-hair-with-markers.)
Me: Sometimes teenagers just like to dye their hair.
Madeline: So, did their hair come like that when they were born or did they just color it?

The beginning of the parade was full of fire trucks, the marching band, and city council members.  But none of them were throwing candy.  Madeline and her buddy Abby diligently stood at the curb waving at every car and truck that passed by hoping for candy.
Madeline: Maybe this is just a waving parade, not a candy parade.

Madeline (said many, many times this week as we drove by the carnival): Let's go to the carnivore!  Is the carnivore ready? When does the carnivore open?
Me: Honey, it's called a carnival, not a carnivore.
Madeline: I know, some people call it a carnival and some people all it a carnivore.  I call it a carnivore.
Um, perhaps she watches too much Dinosaur Train?
